Friends at LUC,
I have been thinking of seasons in life when we are wobbly. I can’t remember my toddler years too well but I have seen one year olds learn to walk and run and they are typically wobbly, they allow themselves to fall sometimes, or sometimes mom or dad offers a helping hand. Being wobbly has more serious implications as we get older. I learned to ride a bike in my adult years and I was terrified of falling because I was taller and riding an adult bike. I was further away from the ground! When I eventually fell, I was winded, I was stunned for a few minutes. Luckily my injuries were minor. I have a scar on my right knee! My mother who is a senior is more careful about her stability, she feels wobbly at times and is intentional about taking her cane when she goes out to appointments or shopping.
Many of our churches are feeling wobbly, a more accurate word might be vulnerable. Our reading from Acts 2: 42-47, describes a spirit-empowered church. The Early church was vulnerable, yet sustained by five practices: worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship, serving and generosity. As congregations in 2026, who have experienced some decline and the effects of aging over the last decade, we often don’t feel strong in all these areas. We are stronger in some areas and more vulnerable in others.
Biblically, we describe ourselves as God’s flock of sheep (belonging to God). Our church buildings maybe similar to pens and (John 10:9) Jesus the good shepherd (the one who guides us), has become our gate. He lies there at the front, protecting us from the threats,, fears, worries, anxieties, feelings of powerlessness that can overwhelm us. He is their to protect us from those forces that are too vulnerable for us to overcome. Because of Jesus’s self-sacrifice, hell will not prevail against Christ Church. Through the mystery of resurrection hope, God is working out a future!
For a bit of intrigue, join us for worship at Lowville United Church, and discover what theme connects the church, Jesus and the lead actor in the movie Project Hail Mary? Rosemary Jackson is our guest music director, leading us with inspiring music that celebrates Jesus Christ as the center of faith and church life.
Please note, on Saturday May 2 nd , we celebrate the Life of June Edna Trenwith at Lowville United Church, 5800 Guelph Line. Visitation is at 11:00 am, service is at 12:00 noon followed by interment at Lowville United Church Cemetery. Following the internment, a reception will be held in the Zimmerman Room. Our thoughts and prayers for God’s comfort, are with her children: Bill, Larry, Bob, Kim, their spouses, grand-children and great-grandchildren .
